A Better Way To Sell Your Ebooks

By Larry Westfall

If you sold Ebooks in the past, you basically had two means to sell what you had written. You could either create a web page and post the book for sale there, or add it to Click-Bank, pay a fee, and wait for affiliates to sell it for you.

Creating the Ebooks was a minor pain also. Most Ebooks were either in PDF format or an executable (EXE). Either way required additional software and a pretty hefty chunk of change.

Today, all that has changed. Now, it is easier than ever to create your Ebook, and get it in front of millions of people.

All you have to do is write the Ebook using any word processor (like Microsoft Word or Open Office), create a cover, and upload it to Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

It will automatically be converted into a format that makes it readable on a Smart Phone (Ipad, Ipod, Android, Blackberry, and more) or a dedicated reader like Kindle. This format is called epub.

When epubs first came out, creating one was also a pain. You had to write it using a word processor, convert it to HTML, save any images in a folder, and upload the whole shooting match to the big book stores. If the epub didn't meet a strict standard, it was rejected.

That has also changed.

All you need to do now is create a document and a cover and upload and they will automatically be converted to the epub format. The whole process takes less than one minute.

With 24-48 hours, your epub will be listed for sale.

There are a couple of additional benefits to posting your epubs to the big name companies. One benefit is that the epub format is basically watered down HTML, so links that can be clicked can be placed in the epub.

You could also write an epub and give it away for free with links in it to your web site.

Another plus is that you can use public domain works and sell them too.

So, what is the downside? You have to pay a commission on each sale. It is approximately 30% to the company, and the rest is yours. For public domain books, you only get 35%.

So, you can either post your literary work on your own web site and hope to get visitors, pay to add it to Click-Bank and wait for affiliates to sell it for a hefty percentage, or put it in front of millions of book hungry people.

The choice is yours.

Thanks for bringing me up to speed on the ebook market. One of these days I will get round to writing the great American ebook.

MasterTikitak - you are most welcome. Keep on writing!

Larry,

I enjoyed your article on eBooks. I have a couple of my own but they are compiled directly from html into executable files which are ideal for the user. I have been thinking about ePubs lately and I think I will check them out when I get some breathing room.
