Backlinks Are The Answer

By Larry Westfall

So, what is the question? How do I get ranked higher in Google's search engine?

Links back to you web site are votes of confidence and the more votes you have, the more popular your site will be in the eyes of the search engine bots.

Here are some ways to get free backlinks to your web site. It takes work and time but it is definitely worth it if you want more traffic.

Articles. There are numerous article directories on the Internet all waiting for you to submit your original articles. Some allow links in the text, others in the author's resource box, and some in both places. Ezinearticles is the leader of the pack.

Blog Comments. One of the easier ways to get links with your keyword/keyphrase anchor text. In the "Name" section of the form, don't use Billy or Susie, use the keyword you are targeting. Don't spam the comment box with trivial comments like "Great blog" or "Thanks". Write something meaningful after you have read the post. Asking questions relative to the post is a good way to get approved.

Link Directories. There are thousands of link directories, free and paid, that will accept your link. Look for the free ones and place you link, anchor text, and description in the proper category.

Authority Sites. Sites like Hubpages and Squidoo allow you to create free pages (hubs or lenses) and from there you can link back to your site. Just make the pages worthwhile.

Bookmark Sites. Sites like Digg, Delicio.us and others (hundreds if not thousands) allow you to bookmark your site and/or post at them for free. This also provides links back to you.

Forums. Joining related forums and creating a profile with your signature link can get you traffic if you participate and make worthwhile forum entries.

Exchanging. I am not a big fan of exchanging links as other sites can easily remove your link or the other site may not be looked upon favorably by search engines. I prefer to choose my own one-way links. You can do this, but you will have to keep a close eye on the site and make sure your link is still there.

The idea is to get as many good links (i.e. dofollow) pointing back to you site as possible. It is tedious work but the results will be worth the effort.

Bill - that is the $64,000 question. You can look at Google Webmaster Tools, Yahoo Site Explorer, Alexa, and SEOBook - and others. They will all give you a number, they will all be different, and they will all be wrong. No search engine really wants you to know, otherwise, you could look at the competition and see how many they have and try to get more. My philosophy is to just get more and more and more.

Thank you for sharing this valuable information, Larry.
The number of backlinks is very important, but also the page rank of those links.
We've been working for three years to build our links and it is starting to show on the search engine placement for our keywords.
I appreciate your detailed intels!!
Keep up the good work.
Best wishes.
Frederick
