Color, Black and White, Or...

By Larry Westfall

One of my favorite hobbies is photography. I have always loved taking pictures and now that I am retired and living in Thailand, I have photo opportunities every day.

Along with the hobby, I have been learning how to use Photoshop to make the pictures better. And one of my recent tutorials taught me how to make color photos into black and white photos.

I have always liked black and white photography probably because I grew up in the 50's and the only thing we had were Polaroid pictures.

Being able to play with a photo and change it from color to black and white without having to change film (like in the old days) is a pure joy.

But, I have also learned to take this one step further. I have learned haw to mask a color photo, change it to black and white, and then "erase" some of the black and white to reveal the color again.

This is much easier to see than for me to explain. So, here is the same picture three different ways.

Tell me what you think. Which one looks the best? Let the debate begin.

Buddhist monk photo taken in Chiang Khan, Thailand. Chiang Khan is in northeastern Thailand, along the Mekong River, and directly across from Laos. We chatted with this monk to get permission to take pictures of a 1,000 year old statue of Lord Buddha.

Great work Larry!

I like all three but if I had to pick just one it would be the black and white, with the partial colour a close second.

Rosemary - thanks. The black and white is my favorite also but I do like the ability to add a touch of color using Photoshop.
