Dofollow Versus Nofollow Links

By Larry Westfall

You have created a great website and now you want to improve your search engine ranking so you get more visitors. You spend lots of time posting at other related blogs, forums, and websites. But, your traffic isn't increasing and your website is on page 47 in Google. What went wrong?

Most likely you have been getting links from sites that are using a "nofollow" tag for external links. This tells the search engine bots to not waste their time following that link.

This means that you just wasted your time posting there.

Now, getting a few nofollow links isn't a bad thing, it is just not worth doing. You want to get dofollow links.

A dofollow Link on a related website pointing back to your site is a vote for your site. It shows the search engine that your site is worthy of a visit.

And, getting dofollow links from higher ranked pages is even better.

So, how do you know if your link will be followed or not? You can use various tools, like SEOBook (free plugin for Firefox), that will indicate if the site has nofollow or dofollow links. As much as possible, don't bother to post a comment on site that isn't going to point back to you.

How many links should you get? The more the merrier. Think of backlinks as votes for your site. The more votes you get, the better your site looks to the search engines and the higher you will be ranked.

If you don't want to use a plugin to identify dofollow blogs, look for Wordpress blogs that are using the Keywordluv plugin. These are definitely dofollow and encourage the use of keywords. You just have to use your first name and the anchor text (keyword/phrase) you want. If your keyword is "investing" you would use Joe@investing for your name and then enter a link to your website along with it.

I am not suggesting that you spam comments or use some sort of script to autopost to blogs. You should visit the site, read the article, and then post a 2-3 sentence comment. This will improve your chances of having your comment approved and a dofollow link pointing back to your site.

Add 5 or 10 per day and watch your site climb up the search engine rankings.
