Page 1 Postion 1 Is The Best Place To Be

By Larry Westfall

Getting to page one of Google's search engine can be a daunting task, but it is achievable for most niche markets. And since Google gets the vast majority of searches, it only makes sense to rank as high as you can in Google.

But just getting to page one isn't good enough. At least for me it isn't. I want to be in position one on page one. Why?

It is simple. Position one on the first page of Google's search engine for a specific word or phrase means you will get a lot more traffic than if you are further down the page.

Consider this. The first position, on average, gets approximately 35% of the clicks. Positions 2 through 5 combined get a little more than position 1. Positions 6 though 20 (pages 1-2) get from 5% down to 0.29%.

So, you can see the importance of being Numero Uno.

How do you get to the top of Google? You need two things primarily - original content and one-way backlinks. Yes, there is more to it than that, but these two factors are what will move you up the search engines and get you more organic traffic.

Google loves content and especially content that is original - not copied, duplicated, stolen, or spun.

Google also loves it when other sites have a link that points to your site. This is like a vote of confidence and the more votes you can get from related, high ranking, authority sites, the better.

I have had some success in getting some phrases ranked on the first page and others in position #1 and it is a constant battle to keep from slipping and maintaining the high positioning.

Most of my web sites are Thailand related and I know that I will never get to the top of the pile for the keyword "Thailand" but I can get rated higher for a longer phrase like "Thailand Hotels" or "Thailand Resorts". A little keyword analysis will show you what phrases have a lot of searches and whether there is little or a lot of competition.

Granted, on-site Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is factored into the search engines algorithm, but well written content and one-way backlinks are two ways you can move up Google's search engine ladder.

So, add some original content to your site and get as many related one-way backlinks to your site as you can.

See you at the top.

I blinked when I read that you're taking on "thailand hotels". I wouldn't have the nerve to go for "phuket hotels" or even "chiangmai hotels". Maybe I'd be willing to tackle "affordable pet-friendly chiangmai hotels with non-smoking rooms and free airport pickup". Well, good luck, you sure have your work cut out for you. I suppose the positive thing about such a major challenge is that you'll be adding plenty of juicy intel right here on Qondio.

Nick - I am on page 2 for "pattaya resorts" and working on getting that one higher.

Personally when possible I shoot for the top 2-4 listings. Especially when I'm targeting a somewhat less competitive keyword. I usually have multiple sites with similar enough content to be able to target the same phrase, or I use sites like Squidoo, Qondio and Hubpages.

With each site I write a completely new article, new title and new meta description but based off the same keywords and phrases. No article spinning. You can then link between the articles to share link authority.

I have always wondered if my site is #1 in the US is it #1 in other countries?

My site is http://www.dog-first-aid-101.com and when I go to Google and type in Dog First Aid it comes up #1 and my other site http://www.protect-your-eyesight.com comes up #1 for the keyword phase Protect Your Eyesight but are they #1 when you type in my keyword phases Dog First Aid and Protect Your Eyesight in Thailand ?

Bill - when I go to google.com they are both #1 (not sure which google server I am hitting). When I go to google.co.th, protect your eyesight is #1 and dog first aid is #2 - this one beat you out - http://www.peteducation.com/category.cfm?c=2+1677

@Bill
for many countries you can add the country code to the end of google.com i.e. http://www.google.com.do/ will send you to the google servers for the Dominican Republic. This gives you a better idea of what people in the DR are seeing.

That is very interesting I did not know you could do that.
My website http://www.dog-first-aid-101.com comes #3 and my other website http://www.protect-your-eyesight.com comes up #1 in http://www.google.com.do

I think changes more with different topic. Eyesight, dogs. Pretty universal and would be as relevant in one country as the next.

Likely it would be a completely different story for Hotel. Whereas Thailand Hotel would once again likely be the same regardless of the search engine
