World's Largest Outdoor Water Party
By Larry Westfall
Songkran, or Thai New Year, is celebrated every year in mid April. Technically it is supposed to be a 3-day affair, but usually the celebrations last about one week. The water tradition goes back many years and symbolizes the man returning from a hard day's work in the rice fields and his wife greeting him with cool water. The festival is supposed to be an honoring of ancestors and elders with a visit to family and a small sprinkling of water on their feet and their shoulder. However, over the years, and with the influence of tourists and they money that the bring to Thailand, Songkran has grown into a raucous, week-long, drunken, water fight involving the entire country. Try and picture people with buckets of water, super soaker water guns, 50-gallon drums of water in the back of pick-up trucks, and water hoses all with the intention of getting anyone and everyone soaking wet. If you venture outdoors during this time of year, you are certain to get soaking wet. So, prepare for it. Leave anything of any value home - don't carry your wallet or purse with important papers. Keep your money, cell phone, cigarettes and anything you don't want to get wet in a zip-lock bag. Thai New Year can be a lot of fun as long as you know you are going to get wet and don't get angry when someone tosses a bucket of ice water on you. Join in the fun and arm yourself with a water weapon and get others wet as they are trying to soak you. But, be careful. It is a time of celebration and many tourists and locals tend to over indulge with beer and whiskey. A mixture of alcohol, wet roads, and motorcycles cause hundreds, or even thousands, of accidents and loss of life. Enjoy Songkran, but make sure you come home alive.
